On July 9, 2024, a department store in San Francisco experienced a theft carried out by a prolific repeat offender known for targeting local retailers. Thanks to a prompt incident report, the individual was apprehended the same day of the incident

This case underscores the vital role ALTO plays in the legal process, ensuring accountability every step of the way. By leveraging expertise and an extensive network of legal professionals, ALTO facilitated a seamless progression through multiple court hearings, ultimately leading to a resolution.

After Apprehension: Case Milestones

Once the offender was taken into custody, ALTO’s legal team submitted evidence, coordinated with the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, and maintained clear  communication between store personnel, law enforcement, and prosecutors. Our   local team supported  both the DA’s and the store team throughout the entire process-, from the initial hearing to the sentencing, addressing critical gaps that could have otherwise led to case dismissal.

ALTO’s  contribution included:

  • Incident Documentation: ALTO gathered surveillance footage, witness statements, and restitution evidence to strengthen the case.
  • Collaboration with Law Enforcement: ALTO worked closely with the DA to ensure a thorough investigation and timely case submission.
  • Victim Advocacy: ALTO supported the store’s Asset Protection Supervisor (APS), preparing them for court testimonies and ensuring they understood their role in the judicial process.
  • ALTO monitored key court proceedings, including drug treatment reviews and charge consolidations. With support from the AP corporate team, ALTO arranged in-person coaching led by the ADA to prepare the store representative for testimony. Our legal experts also supported exploring alternative sentencing options like mental health and diversion programs.

Case Outcome

On March 4 2025, after months of hearings and legal review, the offender was sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay $6,000 in restitution to the department store. This marked a crucial step in delivering accountability and breaking the cycle of recidivism. The restitution helped the store recover financial losses by covering the value of the stolen items, offering some relief from the crime’s impact.
By advocating for fair and effective legal outcomes, ALTO played an essential role in reinforcing accountability, enhancing community safety, and promoting long-term security in the area.

The ALTO Difference

Retailers often  struggle to keep cases moving in an overburdened judicial system. ALTO mitigates these challenges by acting as an advocate for retailers, tracking court dates, managing subpoenas, and preparing store teams for testimony. By working with prosecutors to ensure cases don’t slip through the cracks, this hands-on advocacy allows retail teams to focus on their core business operations while ALTO navigates the complexities of the legal system on their behalf.

ALTO strengthens communities by breaking the cycle of recidivism, improving public safety, and fostering effective collaboration between retailers, law enforcement, and the judicial system.
